ShowCarPerfection was built on a simple belief: every car deserves to be treated as a show car. That philosophy has driven Richard Lin and his team for over 20 years.
Master Detailer · Founder
It started with a car purchase. When the new MINI Cooper launched in the US, dealers were charging $10,000 over MSRP. Richard flew to Memphis, Tennessee, bought one at sticker, and drove it home to California — a cross-country trip that took him through Nashville, Chicago, the Dakotas, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and back down to Los Angeles. The car came home with a cracked windshield and a coat of road grime from rain and snow.
A detailer friend who also owned a MINI suggested they take their cars to a Meguiar's garage clinic. Richard showed up with his MINI and his video camera. That clinic — held November 22, 2003 at Meguiar's headquarters in Irvine — became what Richard believes was Meguiar's first garage clinic with the MINI community. It was a huge success: 16 MINIs detailed in 5 hours.
Richard filmed the whole thing. The result was the Meguiar's Detailing Clinic: So Cal MINI Maniacs DVD — produced under his video company, 3Forces Digital, with Meguiar's Technical Training Specialist Mike Phillips. This was 2003. YouTube didn't exist yet. The DVD reached detailers and enthusiasts across the country.
Eventually, the trailer became a shop. In 2017, Richard's personal 1988 Toyota MR2 build was selected for SEMA in Las Vegas. The following year, the MR2 was featured on Jay Leno's Garage. Today, Richard personally handles every vehicle that comes through the shop. No employees. No handoffs.

The planned itinerary: Memphis → Nashville → Chicago → Dakotas → Montana → Washington → Oregon → Nevada → Los Angeles. The red dashed line shows the direct route Richard skipped in favor of the long way home.
Richard's detailer friend — who also owned a MINI — suggested they bring their cars to a Meguiar's garage clinic. Richard showed up with his road-worn MINI and his video camera. That clinic, held on November 22, 2003 at Meguiar's headquarters in Irvine, California, became what Richard believes was Meguiar's first garage clinic with the MINI community.
It was a massive success. 16 MINIs detailed in 5 hours. Members of the Southern California MINI Maniacs (SCMM) club worked side by side with Meguiar's Technical Training Specialist Mike Phillips, learning machine polishing, paint correction, and trim care on their own cars.
Richard filmed the entire event. The result was the Meguiar's Detailing Clinic: So Cal MINI Maniacs DVD — produced under his video company, 3Forces Digital. This was 2003. YouTube didn't launch for another two years. The DVD reached detailers and enthusiasts across the country.
That same instinct to teach is what drives The Evaluation today. When Richard walks around your car with a paint gauge and a flashlight, he's not just assessing the paint — he's teaching you the story of your own vehicle.

Richard started as ShowCarDetailing — mobile, working out of his MINI Cooper with a trailer bearing his name and phone number. Then the State of California came knocking with a $10,000 fine, claiming the word "detailing" in a business name required registration as a licensed car wash. Richard fought the state. He won — a result so rare that almost nobody had done it before. He changed the name anyway, on his own terms: ShowCarPerfection. The rest is history.

The MINI #95 — paint so deep and reflective it photographs like a mirror. This is what ShowCarPerfection looked like from day one.

Two MINIs, one night. The blue #95 alongside another build — Richard was already part of a community of obsessives.

The full mobile setup — trailer packed, MINI hooked up, ready to go. Everything Richard needed to run a professional detailing operation fit right here.

On location at a MINI meet — the trailer was the shop, the parking lot was the floor. ShowCarDetailing was already building a reputation.

Richard shoots and produces his own paint correction video using his MINI Cooper as the subject — one of the most thorough detailing instructional films of its era. He gives a copy to industry educator Mike Phillips, and the two decide to work together.
Founded as ShowCarDetailing in Anaheim, CA — starting mobile, working out of his MINI Cooper with a trailer bearing his name and phone number.
Invented the OneGrip and PC Guard — two detailing tools developed to improve polisher handling and machine protection.
Launched first joint product with Mike Phillips: "How-To Use the PC for ShowCar Results" — a comprehensive guide to the Porter Cable random orbital polisher, distributed nationally. A follow-up DVD was in development but halted by a cease and desist from Meguiar's, Mike's employer at the time.
Rented first shop space from OC Rod N Customs in Placentia — moving out of mobile operations and into a dedicated studio for the first time. Launched BlackWow Classic Trim Restorer and PreWow — a pre-cleaner formulated to remove wax and polish residue before trim treatment, and an exceptional sunscreen and makeup remover for interior surfaces.
Opened first own ShowCarPerfection studio at 5530 E La Palma Ave, Anaheim — 2,225 sq ft, the first space Richard could truly call his own after three previous shop moves.
A larger 2,800 sq ft unit became available a few doors down at 5548 E La Palma Ave. Moved into what is now the current ShowCarPerfection studio — more room, same obsession. Also began exhibiting at SEMA in Las Vegas, a run that would continue every year through 2019.
Expanded services to include full PPF installation and window tinting. Launched BlackWow Pro, the professional-grade successor to BlackWow Classic.
Joined CS-II as the US distributor and trainer — and contributed to the R&D of the product line itself. Richard came on board not as an end-user but as a partner in developing and bringing professional-grade ceramic coatings to the US market.
Featured as a detailer on Competition Ready (Season 1, Episode 3, aired September 2016) — part of the hand-picked team led by Mike Phillips that detailed four museum signature cars worth over $50 million for the Petersen Automotive Museum grand reopening gala. Cars included Steve McQueen's 1956 Jaguar XKSS and a 1967 Ford GT40 Mark III, one of only seven built. That same year, the State of California threatened a $10,000 fine claiming the word 'detailing' required registration as a car wash. Richard fought the state — and won — and renamed the company ShowCarPerfection.
Richard's 1988 Toyota AW11 MR2 SC — a 29-year-old, unmolested, all-original supercharged build — selected for SEMA in Las Vegas. Japanese Nostalgic Car called it 'a virgin AW11 MR2' that 'gave us the strength to carry on.' The car was there to showcase CS-II ceramic coating. Part of a nine-year consecutive run as SEMA exhibitors (2011–2019).
Jay Leno's Garage was filming an AW11 MR2 episode when their car suffered a major engine failure. They needed a red AW11 at short notice — Richard's was the one they called. The MR2 was featured on Jay Leno's Garage, bringing national recognition to Richard's restoration and detailing work.
Covid ended the nine-year SEMA exhibitor run (2011–2019). Surpassed 100+ 5-star reviews on DemandForce.
Drove to Canada to be trained directly by the founder of XKote. Spent the following year practicing and teaching the additive paint correction process before taking on students officially.
Became the West Coast Authorized Training Center for XKote — the regional authority on additive paint correction.
Completed initial PPF installation training — adding full paint protection film to the ShowCarPerfection service offering.
Follow-up PPF training. 20 years of service — still doing every job personally, still obsessing over every panel.
Continued PPF follow-up training — deepening expertise in full-vehicle and complex panel installations.
Launched GelWow — a new installation gel formulated specifically for PPF and window tint applications. Invented BotLok, a locking mechanism for Zep spray bottles, and filed a Provisional Patent. Also launched SPF OFF — a dedicated sunscreen remover formulated to safely strip sunscreen residue from vehicle paint and surfaces.
Richard doesn't just use the best products — he builds them. Alongside ShowCarPerfection, he has launched two dedicated product brands born directly from real-world detailing problems.
Richard's 1988 Toyota AW11 MR2 SC — 29 years old, unmolested, all-original — was brought to SEMA 2017 to showcase CS-II ceramic coating. Japanese Nostalgic Car wrote that it “gave us the strength to carry on” amid a sea of modified builds.

Jay Leno's Garage was filming an AW11 MR2 episode when the original car suffered a blown head gasket. The production team found Richard's car through a Japanese Nostalgic Car article from SEMA 2017, reached out through MR2 community groups, and Richard's AW11 became the replacement. Filmed June 6, 2018 at Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage in Burbank — the episode aired as Season 4, Episode 14: "Limited Funds, Unlimited Fun!" on September 13, 2018 on CNBC. The MR2 held its own.
